The 7 Deadly Needs

We all have needs. At what point does a need become detrimental to our health and well bein? When a need is outwardly focused it causes us to act in ways that aren’t true to ourself. There is a lot of content out there on needs. In the class that I have been taking they summed of what they call “The 7 deadly needs”. These are –
The Need to Know – you have to know everything (this could be in an education context or gossip). You are never doing because you always think that you still need to know more.
The Need to Be Right – would you rather be right than happy? Is being proved wrong one of your greatest fears?
The Need to Get Even – how often do we seek revenge even if it is in our thoughts. Do you have get all the voices in your head going all the time on what you should have said or done?
The Need to Look Good – our society has really contributed to this one. Eating disorders, consumerism, media have all helped create the distorted body image issues that are so prevalent in our society today.
The Need to Judge – are those voices in your head constantly critiquing those around you? How often do you judge what everyone else is doing (is it even any of your business???).
The Need to Keep Score – do you have a giant scoreboard in your living room? Do you do things and make decisions based on what everyone else is doing or haven’t done?
The Need to Control – do you micromanage those around you? In your effort to control others and yourself, are you exhausted and at the end of your rope?
Unless we are totally enlightened, all of the needs above will drive us at one time or another. It is when a need becomes a constant companion that it becomes a detriment to our health and well being. Which of these needs drive you? and what would it take for you to let go a little???
