What Alice Forgot ~

What Alice Forgot is the title to a book that my youngest daughter bought me for my birthday. It’s about a woman who passes out at the gym, bumps her head and forgets the last 10 years of her life. The tale that follows sure left me reflecting (as usual) about what it would be like to wake up thinking it was 10 years ago. Well, Alice was pregnant with her first child, so when she woke up she couldn’t remember any of her children (there were 3), nor the fact that she was divorcing her husband (who she was totally in love with 10 years ago) and had a new boyfriend. Where were you 10 years ago and what were you doing?
She talks about the days in 1998 (the book was written in 2008) being more spacious. Yep – 2003 was the same for me. My oldest was 6, my youngest was 3. No dance lessons, gymnastics, after school events and no HOMEWORK! Alice said that in 2003 “days were so stingy now” and in 2013 I tend to agree with her.
Alice finds herself snippy, thinner and doing all kinds off things she never dreamed of doing. Member of this committee, heading up that committee, children’s activities every night. If we knew then what we knew now and could rewind, would we still take that same path? She starts thinking of herself as the snippy Alice from the future and the real Alice. But which of them is real? Who would you be without the memories of the past 10 years. The good ones and the bad ones. Your TRUE SELF is formed by all of your memories so who would you be?
So what would the you of 10 years ago think of the you of today? Would she be happy with what you have accomplished? Or would she wonder what happened to her dreams? Would she chastise you for not taking better care of yourself? Or applauding you? Something to think about…..
